I had issues with my system running with ACPI enabled on Win2k. To bad to hear XP does the same thing. This stuff should work with XP as well as Win2k.
I have yet to try the F7 thing on install to disable acpi, but I have used two other methods. To disable it after your system is installed you use device manager and under computer change it from ACPI to standard. Keep in mind this will make you reinstall all your devices again. Or try this:

Disable ACPI BIOS detection by:

Modify the file txtsetup.sif in the Windows 2000 Setup folder.
Change the line "ACPIEnable = 2" to "ACPIEnable = 0".
