Doc {MS} rolly would be best qualified to give you an answer as hes written reviews of most and has hands on knowledge...Difference between the Opteron and other 64x2 is the Core Cache. All dual-core Opteron processors feature 2MB of L2 cache memory (1MB per core){Toledo Core} whereas the 64X2 differ in Specs depending on Speed/Core.
(ie.AMD Athlon 64 X2 3800+ Socket 939, 2.0GHz, 2x512KB L2 cache, E6 core revision – Manchester)

NO MATTER what...my minimum requirement is that I would want a retail version of the CU because the warranty is 3 yrs compared to the OEM which has no more than 90 days. That in itself maybe a problem with finding an Opteron which I think no longer offers a retail version
