Interesting problem one I will be faced with myself along with a serial port need I have. In the past many a times I had to buy that card as a ISA slot with a joystick port too only the cards never lasted very long. I needed the joystick port because the ones built into the sound card never worked right.
Back to present day the LPT1 port was designed for printers & the only changes I know about is one for bi-directional & from CMOS setup there are two modes added for enhanced speed. If the USB adapter does turn out to be wrong than a PCI Express card would be more in line to carry us into the future as I am sure PCI slots will be dropped totally to.
