IOW, for some reason, it wasn't seeing the bootsector properly. Of course, it could also mean that the IDE driver loaded by 2k when you installed on the desktop wasn't directly compatible with the one for the laptop chipset...hmm...

Windows 2000 will actually do a decent job of reconfiguring itself for a new hardwareset, so long as you don't need a perfectly clean installation. Try completing the entire installation on the desktop, then delete the IDE controller from the Device Manager, THEN swap it over to the laptop and attempt a reboot.
