It would probably be OK...but he'd undoubtedly be better off buying a clone. Why don't you recommend the exact components he should get, and tell him to go to an independent and get it built? That way he's not stuck with a brand-name POS.
Go Duron....maybe Athlon XP if he can afford it....Asus or Gigabyte board....a 7200 RPM drive..I'd stay away from Maxtor, but there are people who swear by them. I guess their 7200's are a lot better than the 5400's.....Radeon or GeForce 3 graphics. Should be a lot better system.

If he's set on the Compaq, don't be completely discouraging.....a lot of people are worried about getting a piece of junk if they get a clone....if you know what to ask for, though, you'll be way better off.
