You are right that there is no Win98 compatibility mode in W2K. If he's using a Hewlett-Packard then there's a pretty good chance it's using the AC97 sound from the motherboard.
As far as Safedisk 2 goes, I think the files would all copy OK during installation, but the CD check would fail if there was a problem between his CD drive and Safedisk 2. One thing to try would be a patched .exe to try and get around Safedisk 2. Try the link for that. I know piracy is really detrimental to the market in some parts of the world, but these copy protection schemes are assinine.
