I disagree, I think Transmeta had the right idea and the performance isn't "bad" per se, only that they got Intel's attention a LEEEETTLLE too soon and got double-whammied by the market downturn.

Laptops have never had top-tier performance, and a large percentage of mobile customers don't need it (or want to pay for it) anyway. I'm working just fine with a refurbished PII-300 notebook at the moment, a Crusoe would serve my needs very well and those of many business travelers, too. Trouble is, can the Crusoe offer benefits over and above the competition?

The early answer was yes, but then Intel (not wishing to make another K6 mistake) started pushing to issue low-voltage PIII processors that could nearly match the Crusoe power characteristics at competitive price points, on top of that the market downturn caused manufacturers to consolidate their lines -- and the Crusoe was odd-man out, the same kind of treatment AMD has received in the desktop realm of late.

Since then, Transmeta's value has eaten dust along with many other tech stocks, and a series of glitches and management mis-steps have done a lot to crush the company's potential. If the Crusoe could have hit the mainstream 12-18 months earlier I wager they wouldn't be in nearly the trouble that they are now.
