or else you have a bad install of DX8. Run dxdiag from the "run" option and if it takes more than 2 sec to load, you have a registry problem, most likely caused by a non-installed sound device (onboard crap).

Otherwise, set tRAS to the higest value in the BIOS and see whether that solves the problem.
