I have a stable WinMe machine EXCEPT that periodically MP7 will crash the machine while launching, for no apparent reason. It also will also return an error on slightly-corrupted video files where MP6.1 will continue as best as it can, often getting past the "blip" to continue normal playback.

Do you use Winamp? If so try using it to run a CD -- the results might at least hint at whether you are dealing with a software or hardware problem.
