Not to mention that they were damned liars too!

My mother-in-law had an antique Packard Bell 486-SX 25 which I o/c'd to a whopping 40 mHz back in the days that no one used heatsinks or cpu fans. We also didn't have voltage jumpers either.

Anyway. Their box and manual stated that I could upgrade to an iNTEL 486 DX/2 66 processor. NOT true. They crippled that mainboard so that it could not run ANY 486DX cpu, only 486SX or "OVERDRIVE" cpus.

This was an absolute crock of shit. There was no diffence between a 486SX or DX except that iNTEL had castrated the on-chip FPU on the SX. That mainboard was intensionally castrated to force people to buy iNTEL's overdrive chip (which at the time cost about 3 times as much as a true 486DX-2 66.

Damn, I had just bought an AMD 486DX-2 80 just for that POS machine, and it wouldn't run either. I called Packard Bell's alleged "tech-support" and they could not explain why were ripping people off with castrated mainboards.

PB deserved to die. Fortunately they don't have the guts to ever return to the US market.
