I have never used a multitester before. Are there instructions for it, and are they simple?

If I go to Radio Shack to buy one would I simply ask to buy a multitester and they'll know what I'm asking for (cause I have no clue what to tell them other then that right now).

Finally, the fans only connect one way and I've done every combination I can think of to try and get one working.
