Almost any USB 2.0 hard disk will suffice.
However, for backup use, be sure to buy one with a seperate plug-pack power supply. Many of the powered-from-USB types will attempt draw more current than what the USB specification allows, and as a result they don't always connect properly to the host computer unless you use a funky Y-adapter (which isn't always supplied when you purchase the disk).
Some of the USB hard disks will include extra features like an automated backup program which, when installed on the host computer, can be initiated by pressing a special button on the drive. You don't have to install the software if you don't want to use that feature; the drive will still appear in Windows just like any other USB storage device.
