First thing to try;Boot into "Safe Mode ".Once it,s started up;shut down and restart in Normal Mode.
I don,t have a running copy of Xp on anything at the moment,so i can,t refer to it exactly;but "System Restore" can be found in -Control Panel-System- one of the options there i think.Try looking it up in the "help"from the start menu[if you can get to any of these.Apart from that, there,s "crash recovery"or "system repair" that you use your Install disk to get to.You start as an install would; then it gives you the option to go to the "recovery console" It may be titled "repair"[haven,t used it for a while.]
PS;had you recently installed anything new?If so;maybe uninstall it.
