By lockups you mean like you can not do anything till the hard drive gets done writing ?.
Anyways 256 MB of RAM is very slim amount for windows XP & the hard drive gets used as RAM which is very poor at this job.
Your doing the right thing switching to DDR which is faster RAM & getting 1 GB's is a good fix for the real long hard drive access. Just remember that when you click a program you will still have to wait for it to load & with your system being an older model will be slower then modern units.
