Optic mouse

Hi.
I just got an optic mouse with USB plug, and i wanted to use it as PS/2, so i found an adapter on which you connect the USB as input, and get a male PS/2 as output that goes in the CPU.
The problem is that with Win98, i can't recognize it as a hardware to find the proper driver, i mean, the mouse seems to have power but the O.S. won't read it with the "Add or remove Hardware" tool.

Any ideas?
