If you bring up the "properties" for the "unknown device" entry, does it give any additional info about what it might be?
Incidentally, you can kill the "found new hardware" window by clicking the [Next] buttons until Windows has a chance to try automatically searching for a driver. After failing to find it, if will give you the option to exit the installation without installing anything. Do this instead of canceling early, and Windows *should* stop prompting you every time.
Then, if you do ever find out what it is, you can still isntall the driver by accessing the "unknown device" entry in the Device Manager.
