That really depends:

- on your system (CPU speed)
- and the stage you start from: one or two. Three is a complete basesystem already compiled for a target architecture and is merely to create partions and to untar.

Now, a stage 1 with SATA Raid on a a64 takes two nights to compile and set up including kde and everything. but the point is, it is easier to set up than LFS but you learn as much and it's MUCH easier to maintain. I simply like the portage system.
