You may hear the term used as a reference to the case containing the "main" part of the computer, i.e. everything except the monitor, printer, and mouse/keyboard/joystick/etc. Arguably this usage is technically incorrect, but it still comes up now and then.

The literal device is the microchip inside that case which 'manages' the computer's core operations, and sits underneath a fan/heatsink in the middle of the motherboard.
