In that case, put the old drive in the new system, boot, and allow Windows to try and install everything. Then reboot to Safe Mode, go to the Device Manager, and see how many duplicate devices are running around in there. Delete all instances of duplicates, reboot, and let Windows find the correct ones again.

Then continue on and install any new sound/video/etc. drivers as necessary. Go back to Safe Mode one more time and see if any duplicates popped up again.

You may have to repeat this a couple times to get the system cleaned up, so allow yourself a full evening. Once the system is good to go, do a proper scandisk and defrag.

I'm not sure what you mean by "priceless", "operating system specific" data, but if you're trusting anything that valuable to a WinMe box...eek.
