There will not be much of a difference if the number of people connected the hub are 8 or less and the others are connected to a switch. However there is a noticeable difference in larger lans. My gaming club has had 80 computers connected on a switched network. We had a portion of players connected through a hub and did notice a difference in latency. If you get a few people connected the hub that are transferring large files between computers the latency between computers connecting through the hub will increase and spikes become more prevalent. Of course hubs will work in a gaming lan enviroment but switches are the way to go.
