I found my single drive would lock up on me once it started to do that, in all but one occasions it wouldn't stop until I rebooted. But as long as I kept away from C: it was fine, just couldnt scan on any drive or reformat even. Scanning C: caused the lockup to return.
To recap - I ended up buying a backup 120-80Gb plus two Coolermaster 5.25" bay ide "Cooldrive" coolers and erasing the disk in DFT and redoing the firmware, but for now it is as good as new.
(Good excuse for an upgrade, plus I threw in some rounded cables.  )
