I don't think it was a loose fitting as such, more like a leak caused by the extreme cold we got here over Chistmas/New Year.
The system had been running very reliably and maintenance free for about 9 months, which is why I had no hesitation about leaving it running over the holiday. I hadn't put it into "winter mode" yet though, we had had a very mild early winter but it snapped very cold and probably the coolant went below the point where vinal hoses stay flexible and thereby watertight as the metal connections shrink. Anyway the water leaked out, little by little, system overheated, and CPU commenced its meltdown.
It must have got above 300°C, the solder at the edge of the Waterblock MELTED and probably steamed the rest of the coolant out over the graphic card and sound card.

Oh well.
It's a chance for a DDR XP upgrade.
I've gotten an ASUS A7V266-E, XP1700+ and a KYRO II, which seem to be behaving very well under conventional (fan) cooling.
Thats coming out very soon with a new improved, freeze protected, temperature regulated, double insulated, silicon tubed setup which hopefully won't be subjected to the extremes this one was.

Guys, don't be afraid of water cooling because of this. I have a bit of an extreme setup in an extreme winter environment, do it simply and properly and you won't have these problems. It's a lesson for me not to rush into getting things running halfway done.
