Really depends on what cooler you use, I personally like the Swiftech design, you just hook up the clip and screw out the screw until there is a space between the head and the cooler clip.

No risk of slipping, no risk of bending anything the wrong way, no risk of damaging anything whatsoever and fool proof.

Otherwise, use an old credit card to protect your mobo from a slipped screwdriver ...
