In BIOS, turn off any antivirus. Turn it back on later.
REMOVE all cards and drives other that memory and video. That's all you need for install.
Put them in one at a time later.
Consider doing a fresh install rather than upgrade - I assume that is what you are doing.
Also - consider dual boot.
Backup all he wants / needs, delete all partitions.
Create partition for ME. It needs about 500M for install, so give it room + room for proggies. At least 1.5G. More is better.
Install games and other things XP don't like here.
When you install ME, change the c:\windows directory to something like c:\winME, to keep them seperate in your head.
Create partition for XP. Needs 1G+ so give it ROOM. 2-3G. If it is NTFS WinME will not even know it exists. This is good 'cause you can't monkey around with XP from ME.
You will have to format this partition before installing ME. If you want it NTFS for security on XP, let it reformat it. Easy.

You can also have 1 or more common partitions, say for storing images or MP3s.

Just my eXPerience.
