okay, I have my main box torn apart for the Athlon XP upgrade, so I gave it a shot. No luck with OSR2, Win98 original, or WinMe. It just cries and wails that it needs a primary partition first.

The easy way around that, though, is to just create an 8MB primary partition (that is the minimal size) and then create the extended -- and delete the primary afterward. You lose 8MB of drive space but on a 40GB drive...

OTOH, a drive without a primary partition cannot be bootable, so given the size of that drive it might be wise to create a 500MB or 1.0GB primary, fill the rest with the secondary, then delete the primary. That way, if you ever pull that drive and use it for something else, the necessary space for a decently-sized boot partition will still be there, and you can just recreate it at that time.
