Ron has it right as any history student can confirm, this country was set up so that no religion could be forced upon anyone, not so that religion and the state could be separated as far as possible.

The problem occurs at either extreme -- when government tries to force a religion (Taliban et al) or when the government tries to force NO religion (China, and formerly the USSR). Extreme abuses occur at either end of the spectrum.
