they most likely recommend hooking a regular hub to the cable modem, and not a gateway/router/hub combo. The difference would be, the hub would allow each NIC to have an external IP address (the add'l ones you purchase from them) and the cable modem would plug into the uplink port of the hub.

There is no way (AFAIK) to get a NAT based gateway/router to use more than 1 IP, so if they are recommending purchasing add'l IPs for such a setup, they are full of shit.
