RSA Labs is hosting a challenge to break a 64-bit encryption key, in part to demonstrate that 64-bit encryption CAN be broken and a stronger key is justifiable.

To demonstrate that it is possible to do this using computers' idle cycles, Distributed.net has created the RC5 cracking client that works by automatically using a computer's processor during the idle time when it would otherwise sit unused.

The current 64-bit project has been running for about four years and over half of the keyspace (2^64) has been checked. Given the great increase in computing power over that same time, the remaining key space should take MUCH less time to complete.

Cash prizes and an "in-your-name" donation to charity are involved for whoever's computer discovers the correct key.
