Your onboard sound is using a software codec to run, which does take time off of the CPU, but at 1GHz that is MUCH less of an issue than it used to be.

A good-quality soundcard, though, will generally give better freq response and a higher signal-to-noise ratio. If you are running this thing to a halfway decent set of speakers and you use the computer for movies or music...
