mmmf, "bad EPROM" most likely means "I'm not finding one" -- because you probably don't have one installed. EPROMs are used on LAN cards to permit the computer to boot to a network drive, i.e. a disk-less workstation.

But if the other one freezes...not a good sign, either

3Com anything is very good, but expensive. Personally, I've had good luck with a NetGear FA310-TX Fast Ethernet card, and I've noticed some of the larger hardware review sites use it in their test systems.
