I live in the Chelan, Douglas Grant County area of Washington State, Wenatchee to be exact.
These counties Public Utility Districts own a series of dams on the Columbia river and have been making a killing selling power to California. Being non-profit orginizations they have been spending there extra cash on building a fiber optic networks. Now in two of the three counties you can get fiber right to your door, and the third is not far behind.
Combine this with the opiton of 2 wireless providers and a private local telephone compay I can choose to have wireless, DSL, or fiber. No cable, although I hear its comming soon. (good luck charter)
I really like having a choice. For right now I will just stick with my ol 4.5 mbps DSL. It's on a brand new dslam with an ATM relay. I will not get this transfer rate for long, but for now I am in downloading bliss.
I helps to have friends working at the local private telephone co. startup.
