I was asked to comment on the following specs for a computer that would be used mainly for video compressing (at the moment, mainly quicktime and realvideo) for internet streaming. Also, some video editing may be done, but compression speed is of the utmost importance. Here it is (cost are in canadian dollars):
Processor AMD Athlon 1.2 GHz 266FSB Athlon Socket A $399.85
Motherboard Iwill KK266-Raid Socket A $238.58
Memory All Comp. 256MB DDR SDRAM PC2100 $347.58
Case Lite-ON ATX High End Tower Case MT130 $82.61
IDE Drives Two 60GB IBM Deskstars Ultra100 7200RPM 2048k $719.98
Monitor Hansol 19" 900P TCO .26(.22) $429.85
Video card ATI RADEON 64MB DDR TV in/out Agp 4X OEM $314.14
Network card Aopen AON325 PCI 10/100 Network Card $29.95
Keyboard Logitech Itouch USB-PS/2 $69.50
Mouse Logitech Cordless MouseMan Wheel $83.72
Removable 1 Iomega 2GB External Jaz Drive $489.95
Removable 2 Zip NEC 100 Meg Internal IDE - bare drive $69.85
Accessories Cables, fans, etc $180.00
Oper. System Windows 2000 Pro $215.85
Total before tax $3,671.42
Software Editing, Compression, Web, Graphic $800.00
I was thinking that the DDR woudn't really be worth the cost since performance gain is minimal when running the FSB@133+ (from what I understand). Instead I think they should add an extra 256Mb PC133. Also, is a radeon really needed? Would a cheaper generic one and get a firewire card serve them better? They could get a firewire card with the saved cash...
One last thing... From Tom's articles I see that the P4 is a lot faster in encoding mp4 video. I know that the Athlon kick's the P4's butt in just about every other aspect but since this machine will be used for media encoding would the added cost of a p4 be justified. Does anyone know if it performs better for other types of video compression, not just the optimized flask mp4?
Thanks for your comments,
