Both people are right or should be right, the noise is the Power On Self Test = POST which
comes from the speaker, your computer seems to be failing this test which needs to be fixed.

You should leave the speaker plugged in & the number of beeps & sometimes the lenght of the
beeps may help you find out what is wrong with your computer.

Does the computer still bootup & work OK ?

Before working on inside of computer unplug the computer from the wall first.
Many things can cause an error on an old system, like dust built up in the Power Supply so
no cooling is going on & dust can be built up on the CPU too. PS's can be removed & blown
out with an air gun.
Common problems are cards, (CPU's & RAM included) plugged into the Mother Board have come loose over time from the hot (on) & cold (off) changes, also chips (IC's) can unplug themselfs & just need to be pushed back down (they make a weird noise like a crunch sound when they are reseated, they can be on cards or on the MoBo. To fix this problem, unplug everthing that can be unplugged & replug back in even & firmly, unless they are IC's that are plugged into sockets & just push back evenly & firmly.

Other causes are old memory can go bad, even cache memory, CPU's can go bad to, video cards too even stuff solidiered to the MoBo.

If you need a link to the beep charts, ask on your next post here

Bob
