Here it is, point by point (yes, I have too much time on my hands right now), assuming you want to do it, but first --

Keeping in mind the options Ben suggested about partitioning are better, and in addition to LW's comment about programs you ALSO LOSE

* Internet Explorer Favorites (unless you back up C:\windows\favorites elsewhere, then copy it back later -- although those little suckers won't copy back 'in order').

* Desktop shortcuts and any files saved on the desktop

* Wallpapers

You can back all of these up, of course, just don't forget even once and then halfway through the new installation go "OOOHHHHH, CRAAA..." like I have a couple times.

----------

Run scandisk, with a surface test, before doing anything else. As long as you're redoing everything you may as well verify disk integrity.

Create a Windows 98 boot disk (Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs, 'Startup Disk' tag. Additionally, copy C:\windows\command\deltree.exe, and attrib.exe from the same directory, to the boot disk.

Reboot to your new floppy, select "yes" when asked about enabling CD-ROM support. Use deltree.exe to completely remove C:\windows and, while you're at it, C:\program files (c:\progra~1 when you're in DOS mode, that is). Don't forget to back up any and all goodies first. Also clean out all files in the root of C. Syntax:

A:\> deltree c:\windows
Delete "c:\windows" and all its contents? <Y/N> Y
Deleting c:\windows...

A:\> deltree c:\progra~1
Delete "c:\progra~1" and all its contents? <Y/N> Y
Deleting c:\progra~1...

A:\> attrib c:\*.* -shr
A:\> del c:\*.*
All files in directory will be deleted!
Are you sure? <Y/N> Y
A:\>

That can take up a good ten minutes; the deltree command is effective, but on a large directory it takes a while to complete. When finished, insert your Windows 98 CD-ROM, switch to it, and run "setup.exe"

Set up windows. Note that in doing this you have fragmented the living daylights out of your hard drive. RUN DEFRAG before doing any further driver or program installations.
