you should understand:

P4 aside, Intel doesn't even have much in chipset offerings right now, save for the i815 incarnations which are 512MB memory-limited.

VIA currently has >>50% of the chipset market, Intel and AMD.

A hard-drive incompatibility is not necessarily a chipset fault but can also be caused by faulty BIOS code, a motherboard hardware defect, a fault in the hard drive's own controller...

Abit, according to the old-timers who should know, doesn't have the best quality record in the industry.

So, you say you've tried different known-working hard drives and cable-swaps, and fooled with BIOS settings -- so assuming you've also tried clearing the CMOS and still no go, you may need to be filling out RMA forms for that board.

And next time, Asus, MSI...
