Couple prominent reasons,
(1) AMD-supporting chipset offerings limited until very recently, the chipset vendors are capitalists and simple market economics dictate (a higher) price.
(2) Athlon mobos selling quite well, the mobo vendors are also capitalists so...
(3) Shortage of low-end chipset offerings (the SiS one just came out recently) has resulted in all of the available boards being higher-end models, hence the perceived average price point is higher. Sure, there are $50 Intel boards but probably not the kind you would put in a high-end machine.
