Didn't mean to cause so much confusion. I'm running Win98.... not the second edition though. I'm getting plenty of air to the case. I've left the case open and experienced the same problems.
If it was a heat problem don't you think it would
do it immediately after I reboot from the freeze up? I have actually rebooted right after this happens and not have any problems at all after that.

The specifics of the system are:
k6-3 450mhz
192 mb ram
20 gig hd
azuz pt5vmd mb (I just updated the bios chip)
cdrom
cd burner
video capture
ati rage pro vga graphics
