if you make it any partition then you will lose the data. I am not sure how you could recover those data, maybe "Lost and Found" would work, that software reads raw data off the drive and then you can store them anywhere you want.

What it sounds like is that your partition table got destroyed one way or the other. Without seeing what it says, it is difficult to give you any advice but there may be a way of setting that partition as active without destroying the data.

One thing you should try is using Seagate's DiscWizard and see whether that'll let you access the "lost partition".
