AVG has been very good over the past several years but they're on the cusp of a transition that may sink the value of their product. AVG is rapidly becoming bloated with unnecessary features and they have made some really stupid mistakes in the recent past, like a link scanner that was enabled by default and initially could not be disabled without a reg hack, and as recently as yesterday, virus database with a corrupted signature file that attempted to flag and offer the opportunity to delete User.exe. (It was caught and correct within hours but that's a very serious mistake.)

So far they're still somewhat responsive to their users and I continue to use AVG for now, but some AVG users are starting to switch to Avira and Avast and I may be next if they release a Version 9 that doesn't slim the product back down to something manageable.
