Try formatting with your XP disk.Leave the HD blank /no partitions. then start the install process.It will bring up options "where to install" and "format";in the early stages.

For large disks [over 137 gig-i think]you need LBA[large Block Access] that comes with XP and Vista ,but nothing prior.For OS's 2K and back you need "link below"
