Sometimes the ATX12V cable is intertwined with 12V feed from the primary power plug, and sometimes it isn't. In the latter case, you must have the connector or there will be no power to drive the DC-to-DC converter for the CPU.

In the former case, the main reason for using it is that it provides a second point of power entry to the board and therefore reduces trace heating and voltage drop in the path from the primary power plug. However, if the system boots and runs stable, then it isn't strictly necessary.

If you want to add it, you might be able to find a conversion dongle that snaps into a 5.25" disk drive plug.
