Well, I guess if you've found 'em in CD and DVD drives, then that's what they're commonly using in CD and DVD drives.

The motor driving the spindle in most hard disks and floppy drives, though, is typically a "brushless DC motor" of the type described.

A stepper motor is something different, and shouldn't be confused with the type I described. They were sometimes used for head-positioning duty in old, low-capacity disk drives of various types.
