As Ludi says ;they,re to filter and control the power.From your photo,this is the case.The ones in the top left hand corner are with Regulator chips[the black ones with three wire pins];which means they are necessary.[I wouldn,t try starting up without them,although i have booted up a motherboard with a couple of missing capacitors and one hanging off by one leg.]
You can put in capacitors,as long as your shure you have the right type[eg 2200mfd/6.3 volt]The voltage is as important as the M.F.D. value,in digital circuits like this.A capacitor of the same value but higher voltage,may start storing too much power and raise the voltage passing through ,higher than neccessary for the function of the circuit;either making it unstable or trashing components down the line.
Make shure you get the POLARITY right [+ and - ]Motherboards are multi layered.Holes that go from one side to the other ,go through a few layers,so its important that it is done cleanly.Don,t let the area youre working on get TOO HOT.[It could damage the motherboard]
