There are quite a few differences in the protocol between DDR and DDR2 - even though I was told recently that the posted CAS is not used on PCs (I still have to find out more about that before I can make a definite statement)

So if the controller does not specifically support one protocol, then it is really more than just a voltage adjustment as what was the case in the Tualatin to Socket 370 or even the Pentium M to Socket 478 (plus a few signal reroutes in that case).
