2 x 256 MB of memory is already pushing what the chipset can handle unless you are using registered DIMMs. The address and command units of the chipset were made with 64-128 MB modules in mind, especially with SDRAM. If you go beyond this, you will run into stability problems.

The VIA chipset is not the highest quality component out there, at the time it was not a bad choice but you may consider upgrading to something more recent
