In CMOS setup auto should work but limit auto to only actually used HD locations.
OMG you got a refurb HD with no brand name & no info like cylinders, tracks & sector. Besides no info on the jumpers & its settings. Actually the HD is not a proven good HD yet as maybe in shipping the drive got broken.

Now Western Digital HD's have a master, slave & single jumper settings.
Besides I remember some HD's having a 2 or 4 gig limit jumper of some kind that I never had to use.
On a couple of my HD's I had to turn off the DMA or ultra DMA on the HD controller in CMOS setup before the HD would work with that MoBo.

The best thing I can think of is test new refurb HD on a more modern system to see if it works before slapping into the old system.

Now never owning an IBM I have no idea what your CMOS setup BIOS is like either. I can only say think of ways to mix things up you haven covered.
Bob
