The old fuse should have markings indicating what its rating is (3A/250V, that kind of thing), and it is probabaly a "fast-acting" type.

The new fuse needs to be the same thing. (Reason: Substitution of a "slow-blow" fuse, or a fuse with a different rating, might be no better than the bypass you have in there now.)
