There is a high-intensity fluorescent lamp in there, similar to what is used in flatbed scanners. It will have a service life about equal to a good CRT tube, and it is generally not replaceable. General rule of thumb is to shut off the monitor (or set your Windows power management to shut off the monitor) when not using it for extended periods, but leave it on if you will be using it again within 30-60 minutes.

There are some display technology experiments and/or early products available that use high-intensity LEDs, but not many...yet.
