thanks i appreciate the tips...i did take the heatsink off only to check to see if the cpu was damaged or chipped (obv signs of failure) but didnt see anything...the temps dont look terrible either...the PSU is Antec the otherone is also name brand both 350-450 PSU's..same issue...i will try and see if i can clean the other contacts, i dont see why that would affect running because i took everything out of the pci slots and still had the problem...so you say i should check the mobo for heat as well i can do that...do either of you think 45c is high for cpu temp? ive tried a fan on it and no change as far as freeze time seems to happen random sometimes seconds after booting into windows desktop or right on the black with bar moving xp welcome screen. but usually freezes for sure within first 3min of in windows...will update you all...

i know of several other forums where people have that issue its very technical and takes a lot of work to figure out which hw is bad...thanks...will update later...this is the hardest hardware problem yet....
