I've had the missing HDD before on Sonny's machine but it came out of it and never did it again. I kind of thought it was the drive controller on the HDD
acting up even though it was a new HDD. Only did it for a few months and then at random.

Are the HDD and the CD-ROM on the same IDE channel? Dell sometimes does that. If they are seperate channel's I'd kind of figure the onboard IDE channels are possibly going out. If it's just one, then try disconnecting the CD-ROM and see what gives and better still disconnect the CD-ROM even if it's on the seperate channel and see what happens. I had one machine that gave me 7 kinds of fits and it was the CD-ROM causing the problem with both channels. But that was an older K62 machine.
